Inspiration for the National Unity Flag
By Philip Rankin Cooney
The Flag’s Designer / Curator

The National Unity Flag was conceived in a state of reflection after witnessing the U.S. Congress spontaneously join hands and sing God Bless America hours after the horrific and shattering events of September 11th, 2001. Congress, a historically divided group, stood before a broker nation, reached out and symbolically said we will get through this together.

Since my visualization of the flag, many persons and thousands of stitches have come together to fulfill a vision that has been entitled “The National Unity Flag”. As I witness others observe the flag, my person is honored, my spirit is humbled, and my heart is touched by their response. It is clear that this Unity Flag is meant for display in order to heal, touch, and encourage continued unification of persons, communities, and country.

My prayer is that as people experience the National Unity Flag they leave a bit more united in spirit, and focused on how to make a difference, in a world, that we learned from the events of September 11th, 2001 is sometimes tragic and fragile. And, in those times when the fabric of life is ripped and torn we come together using the threads of compassion, caring and giving. As we have gone forward weaving our lives back together since September 11th 2001, we discovered that in horrific events there will be heroic efforts, in tragedy there is triumph, and in disaster we shall find deliverance by coming together. May this fabric of unification, in all its majestic colors and patriotic symbolism, serve as a reminder to all, of Strength in Unity.
